THISS Studio project: Hartley House, Leytonstone - nominated for a Don’t Move, Improve! award
THISS Studio is an architecture and design studio specialising in the bespoke design of spaces, buildings, objects and landscapes. They are also our lovely East London neighbours. We recently caught up to find out more about the ethos of the studio and why this part of London is such an inspiring place to live and work.
We take a people and material first approach to our work...
We love to collaborate with clients and fellow creative practitioners to make new and exciting work. We love what we do and have a lot of fun doing it! We’ve always been in East London (Sash grew up in Stoke Newington) so it’s always been home.
Tamsin and I studied together and share a lot of values about the joy of creating beautiful work with great people...
We have a particular fascination with technology and landscape, and love to experiment. I think these shared interests and aligned ways of being in the world are the backbone of the studio, and the projects we do are a collective response to our constant inquiry to try new things and learn from each opportunity.
We don’t really have a house style if I am honest - I find the idea of a stylised approach to design quite limiting...
We value the input of so many external forces in each project, and reference far and wide. We trust ourselves as inquisitive and open minded designers to produce something fresh and new each time. If I had to pigeon-hole it I’d say we are at our hearts freshly contemporary with an experimental twist.
We have a thriving and constantly evolving community around us of thinkers, makers and doers across all fields which really inspires us...
We periodically invite local practitioners to our studio for our free ‘Chit-Chat & Cicchetti’ events where we invite people to talk about their work over snacks and drinks. It’s super fun and informal and a great way to connect with all the amazing people around us.
Our latest project ‘Hartley House’ I think typifies our approach to making work...
It is a modest remodelling of a Victorian terrace in Leytonstone, where we convinced our lovely clients to save their money by not extending and instead invest in recalibrating the kitchen space and its connection to the garden. The outcome was a unique modification of the house that is playful and quirky while still meeting all the needs of their young family. The project has been nominated for a Don’t Move, Improve! award too which we are thrilled about.

My perfect weekend in East London would be...
A run to the West Reservoir for a swim, followed by a stroll towards London Fields to meet friends and a snack at Pophams. Can’t be beaten!
East London’s best kept secret...
Has got to be The Victory on Vyner Street, our quiet little local boozer. It’s like stepping back in time! Super friendly vibes that feels like it’s never changed.
My East London guilty pleasure...
It has to be a cheeky fry-up lunch on a Friday at The Canteen on Hackney Road - gets me every time.
